Mineral or carbon: choosing your brow tattoo pigment
Not every cosmetic tattoo has to be forever. The pigment that goes into your skin is a decision you make with Emmanita at your appointment.
The big split is between mineral pigments and carbon-based pigments. Mineral fades a lot within one to two years. Carbon holds on for years, and if you change your mind later, waiting it out isn’t an option.
Many first-time clients start with mineral because it keeps you in control. If you love your new brows, more staying power can be built in at a later session. If you don’t, you do nothing and they soften.
Mineral pigments: the forgiving option
Mineral pigments are made from iron oxides. In the skin they heal soft, matte and natural, which suits an ombré or powder brow.
The trade-off is they don’t stay. Your body breaks the particles down gradually, and mineral brows commonly fade by half or more within one to two years. After that you get to decide:
- Love them? Book a colour boost, same look or a tweak.
- Want a different shape or colour? Easier, because there is less old pigment to work around.
- Over it? Do nothing. They keep softening.
Mineral fades warm rather than grey, so what’s left can read a touch red, orange or peachy. That can be balanced at a colour boost, or you can wait it out.
Mineral is also not a pigment you want lasered. Iron oxide can turn darker under some lasers instead of breaking up, so with mineral the exit plan is time.
Carbon-based pigments: built to stay
Carbon-based pigments are made from carbon black and other synthetic colourants. They heal rich and crisp and hold their colour for years.
The catch is they don’t fade out, they fade cooler. As the warmer tones break down first, the carbon left behind can look ashy, grey or blue. If you want them gone, it’s laser or saline removal, usually over more than one session.
Carbon suits clients who already know they love cosmetic tattoo and want it to last. If you’re unsure, ask Emmanita about starting with mineral.
Mineral first, carbon when you’re sure
Your first treatment is mineral. You heal, live with the shape and colour, and find out whether cosmetic tattoo is for you. If you want them to last longer, ask about moving to a longer-lasting pigment at a later session. If not, stay mineral. Nothing lost either way.
What decides it
- Whether this is your first cosmetic tattoo.
- How long you want it to last, and how much upkeep you’re up for.
- Your skin and hair colour, which affect whether a pigment fades warm or cool on you.
- Sun, swimming and active skincare, which all speed up fading.
- Whether you might want to change the shape or style later.

Questions
Will mineral pigment be completely gone after two years?
Not always. Most of the colour fades, but a faint warm tint can stay. It can be balanced at a colour boost, or you can keep waiting.
Can I start with mineral and switch to carbon later?
Yes. Ask Emmanita at your colour boost if you want your brows to last longer.
Can carbon-based pigment be removed?
Yes, but not by waiting. It takes laser or saline removal, usually over more than one session.
Why not just use the longest-lasting pigment?
Because styles, hair colour and faces change. Pigment that outlasts the look you wanted is a problem, not a bonus.
Can I have cosmetic tattooing if I’m under 18?
No. You must be 18 or over. Queensland law does not allow tattooing anyone under 18, including cosmetic tattooing.
